        "content": "<p>Fishermen fall victim to waterfront project<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): More than 15,000 fishermen, living along<br>\nJakarta's northern shoreline in East Jakarta, will have to give<br>\nup their houses and livelihood when construction of the gigantic<br>\nWater Front City (WFC) project gets underway.<\/p>\n<p>\"Basically we agree with the construction of this Water Front<br>\nCity project, as long as the officials in charge pay due<br>\nattention to the plight of the fishermen living around the<br>\nproject. The developer should bear in mind that construction of<br>\nthe project is for the people's welfare,\" Saud Rahman, a member<br>\nof city council's Commission D, said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>At the moment the total number of fishermen in Jakarta is<br>\n17,406, 6,586 of whom are natives of Jakarta, and the others<br>\nhailing from various other regions in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>An official of North Jakarta's fisheries department, Warto,<br>\nconfirmed that the majority of fishermen would have to move from<br>\nthe area affected by the project.<\/p>\n<p>\"The fishermen who have Jakarta ID cards will still be able to<br>\nlive in nearby Muara Angke and operate in Jakarta's sea as usual.<br>\nThey are also allowed to sell their fish at Muara Baru and Muara<br>\nAngke fish auction sites,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p>Saud said that the developer should build public and social<br>\nfacilities for the fishermen who are not affected by the<br>\nconstruction of the project.\"If necessary, the developer should<br>\nbuild low cost apartments for the fishermen,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p>The head of Jakarta's fisheries department office, Soemaryo<br>\nWijoyo, said that his office has given some information to the<br>\nfisherman.
