Fishermen arrested for dynamite fishing<\/p>\n
KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: A joint security team of the
\nWakatobi National Park in Buton, Southeast Sulawesi, has arrested
\nseven fishermen for allegedly using dynamite to catch fish in
\nwaters off Runduma Island.<\/p>\n
Head of the Wakatobi park Syihabuddin said on Monday the
\nseven, from Sikka regency, East Nusa Tenggara, were caught aboard
\ntheir ship, KM Burung Laut, last weekend after people on the
\nisland reported their illegal operation.<\/p>\n
The suspects were caught by the team comprising rangers,
\npolice officers and soldiers.<\/p>\n
The team also seized at least 22 homemade bombs and a ton of
\nfish believed to have been caught using the explosives.<\/p>\n
Syihabuddin said the park has difficulty protecting Wakatobi
\nwaters from dynamite fishing due to a shortage of personnel to
\nguard the area of 1.3 million hectares.<\/p>\n
He hopes local people will help in safeguarding the park.<\/p>\n
