        "content": "<p>Fish polluted by mercury, lead<\/p>\n<p>BANDUNG: Researchers from Padjadjaran University in Bandung have<br>\nfound toxic levels of metallic elements in the fish in Saguling<br>\nDam in the Bandung regency.<\/p>\n<p>The metallic elements detected in the fish were cadmium, lead<br>\nand mercury, according to the researchers from the university&apos;s<br>\nResearch Center for Natural Resources and the Environment.<\/p>\n<p>Hilmi Salim, the program coordinator for the Aquatic Ecology<br>\nDivision in the center, said on Wednesday he suspected that the<br>\ntoxic elements originated from several industries and households<br>\nsurrounding the large dam.<\/p>\n<p>Oekan Abdullah, the chairman of the center, added that the<br>\npollution in the dam was linked to the daily activities of some<br>\nfour million people living near the dam and along the Citarum<br>\nRiver in the West Java, which flows into the dam.<\/p>\n<p>Contamination of fish with toxic levels of mercury, can lead<br>\nto birth defects in human beings, among other things. -- JP<\/p>",
