Fish lovers get one-stop market, resto<\/p>\n

Good news for fish lovers: The city now has a one-stop fish
\nmarket and restaurant on downtown Jl. Pejompongan, Central
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Unlike traditional fish market and restaurants in Muara Angke,
\nNorth Jakarta -- which are on the beach -- the new three-story
\nair-conditioned market is located close to Pejompongan low-cost
\napartments.<\/p>\n
The market, which was inaugurated on Sunday by President
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri, will offer 20 kinds of live fish, 80
\ntypes of fresh fish and frozen fish.<\/p>\n
\"We use the first floor to display live and fresh fish,\"
\nYoseph, the market's field supervisor, told The Jakarta Post.
\nSome live fish, lobsters and clams were observed in the aquarium
\nwhile iced fresh fish were also displayed.<\/p>\n
The second and third stories of the building are still under
\nconstruction.<\/p>\n
City-owned PD Pembangunan Sarana Jaya's president director
\nTebyan A'Maari said that the second floor would serve as a
\nprocessed and dried fish market that would remain open 24 hours.
\nWhile the third story would be used for restaurants.<\/p>\n
\"The price of fish sold here is no greater than that of fish
\nsold in Muara Karang. Of course, this place is more comfortable
\nthan Muara Karang,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Tebyan said the fish-market management would provide a
\ndelivery service using trucks and motorcycles.<\/p>\n
The Pejompongan fish market is the first project to be
\ncompleted among five similar projects in five municipalities.<\/p>\n
Governor Sutiyoso said the fish market was constructed as a
\npart of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the city
\nadministration and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries
\non March 11, 2003.<\/p>\n
\"In having a downtown fish market, we hope to encourage the
\npublic to boost their fish consumption,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The fish market's construction, however, has been strongly
\nopposed by locals.<\/p>\n
According to Gubernatorial Decree No. 473\/1995 signed by then
\ngovernor Surjadi Soedirdja, the 4.6-hectare plot of land would
\nhave been used for the construction of low-cost apartments and
\npublic facilities. However, the administration had only managed
\nto secure the ownership of, and clear for construction, 4,000
\nsquare meters of land.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso admitted that he had approved the move to use the
\nland for the fish market.<\/p>\n
\"It is common that land use is changed, for the greater
\nbenefit of the public,\" he argued.<\/p>\n
He denied that locals rejected the fish market.<\/p>\n
\"I have not heard about their opposition. Besides, the market
\nconstruction has been finished now,\" he concluded.<\/p>",
