Fish agency addresses complaint<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The head of the city fishery agency guaranteed
\nfairness in allocating space in the new North Jakarta fish market
\nto 220 regular fish vendors from the old fish market as soon as
\npossible.<\/p>\n
He denied that the agency granted new vendors a larger space
\nthan regular auctioneers at the new Muara Angke market.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, around 30 fish vendors filed complaints with the
\ncouncil's Commission B for Economic Affairs, saying the agency
\nhad given smaller auction space, lapak, to 264 new Muara Angke
\nfish vendors.<\/p>\n
According to regular vendors, new vendors could secure up to
\n18 lapak while they only received no more than six.<\/p>\n
One lapak is equivalent to two square meters. The protesters
\nsaid around 120 of 220 regular vendors already got an average of
\nsix lapak.<\/p>\n
Head of the agency, M. Rahardjo, said the agency would
\nprioritize regular vendors from the old market. He said only 114
\nnew vendors obtained auction space. There were 870 lapak
\navailable in the new market.<\/p>\n
Rahardjo admitted that the success of the Muara Angke fish
\nmarket had motivated people to hold auctions there and each
\nseller demanded special attention.<\/p>\n
He also said several new vendors "dramatized" the problem
\nwhich initiated the arguments.<\/p>\n
"We are going to provide auction space to regular fish vendors
\nsoon," Rahardjo said, adding that the agency would distribute
\nauction space by drawing a lottery.<\/p>\n
Fish vendors who completed all three requirements -- having a
\nsales permit and Jakarta identification card, as well as paying
\nnecessary government fees, would receive auction space. (10)<\/p>",
