        "content": "<p>Fischer agrees with subsidies<\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON (Dow Jones): Stanley Fischer, first deputy managing<br>\ndirector of the International Monetary Fund, said yesterday he<br>\nexpects the revised economic program with Indonesia to include<br>\nfurther \"temporary subsidies\" to protect the poor.<\/p>\n<p>Fischer, in an address opening a two-day IMF conference<br>\nentitled \"Economic Policy and Equity,\" said that in Indonesia the<br>\nIMF's revised program \"will undoubtedly\" include measures<br>\ndesigned to provide food subsidies and other fiscal subsidies on<br>\nitems deemed essential for low-income groups.<\/p>\n<p>\"The program also makes provision for higher spending on<br>\nhealth and education, subsidized credit for small and medium-size<br>\nenterprises and labor-intensive public works,\" Fischer said.<\/p>\n<p>Fischer did not elaborate on exactly when talks over revising<br>\nIMF targets under Indonesia's US$43 billion IMF-led program will<br>\nbe completed. But an IMF negotiating team was scheduled to begin<br>\ntalks in Jakarta today and IMF officials have indicated rapid<br>\nprogress has been expected.<\/p>",
