First beauty queen for East Timor<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The latest hot issue in East Timor has nothing
\nto do with politics: It has selected its first beauty queen.<\/p>\n
The first ever beauty contest in the youngest province was
\nheld by the Citra Timor Workshop.<\/p>\n
Sixty teenage-girls entered the Top Model Contest in the hope
\nof becoming the reigning beauty to represent the province in the
\n1997 Elite Lux Model pageant.<\/p>\n
First, second and third place winners will represent East
\nTimor in the Elite Lux Model 1997 contest which will be held in
\nJakarta in June," said pageant organizer Sitorus during the
\ncontest's final round Sunday in Dili.<\/p>\n
Humbelina Borromeu Duarte, 22, beat 11 other finalists to take
\nthe throne.<\/p>\n
"A model must have a strong character and her identity firmly
\nplanted in the roots of her local culture," said Humbelina who is
\nin her seventh semester of agriculture studies at the local
\nuniversity.<\/p>\n
As reported by Antara she said the modeling profession was a
\npotential means of promoting Timorese culture.<\/p>\n
She stressed a need for similar events to cultivate the
\npotential of East Timorese youth.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile the commander of the East Timor military resort,
\nCol. Mahidin Simbolon, as advisor to Citra Timor Workshop,
\npointed out that winners of the pageant will be come ambassadors
\nof the province and introduce its culture to other areas ignorant
\nof the arts and traditions of the land of Lorosae. (mds)<\/p>",
