Firms to operate new buses on 12 routes<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Four city bus companies will soon begin
\noperating 120 new buses on 12 new routes in a bid to help improve
\npublic transportation services.<\/p>\n
Aip Sjaifuddin, head of the Organization of Land
\nTransportation Companies, told reporters yesterday that permits
\nfor the operation of the new buses have been issued by the City
\nLand Traffic Control Agency.<\/p>\n
Aip said he did not know when the operation of the 120 buses
\nwill start because the agency is letting the four companies
\ndecide the schedules for their operations.<\/p>\n
\"The 120 new buses will mostly be used to serve long distance
\nroutes, including the Pasar Minggu-Kalideres and Pulo Gadung-
\nMuara Karang routes,\" Aip said.<\/p>\n
He said the four companies given permits are Bianglala,
\nMastrans, Mayasari Bhakti and Giri Indah.<\/p>\n
He said the 120 buses are part of 1,000 new buses, which will
\nbe deployed in the city in the near future. They include air
\nconditioned and non-air conditioned types, he said, refusing to
\ngive details of the plan. \"I don't remember the details,\" he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
Last year the city administration decided to operate 1,000
\nmore buses, to strengthen Jakarta's existing fleet to meet the
\npublic's growing demand for transportation.<\/p>\n
City Council urged the city administration recently to speed
\nup the operation of the additional buses so as to help curb the
\nincreasingly chaotic condition of public transportation.<\/p>\n
The Land Transport Control Agency admitted that public
\ntransportation in the city is short of vehicles, and that their
\nconditions are no longer meeting requirements for roadworthiness
\nand public safety.<\/p>\n
The office has been conducting an operation, over the last few
\nyears, to impound big buses and mini buses found violating the
\nsafety regulations, he said.<\/p>\n
He said that the office has also conducted training courses
\nfor bus drivers, with the aim of improving their ability to drive
\nproperly.<\/p>\n
Aip said his organization has urged drivers of old buses not
\nto envy drivers of new buses.<\/p>\n
\"However, I cannot guarantee there will not be strikes by
\ndrivers of old buses, or negative impacts caused by their
