'Firms must hire disabled people'<\/p>\n
Every year countries around the world, including Indonesia, mark
\nDec. 3 as the International Day for Disabled Persons. But, how
\ndoes Indonesia treat disabled people in the country? The Jakarta
\nPost interviewed residents here on the issue.<\/p>\n
Candra Adiguna, 35, is a resident of Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD),
\nTangerang. He works for a bank on Jl. Gatot Subroto, South
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
I agree that we have to give fair access to disabled people
\nbecause they also have the right to benefit from our development
\nprograms.<\/p>\n
They must have access to education and jobs and benefit from
\nvarious urban facilities.<\/p>\n
I respect companies that employ disabled persons for certain
\njobs. It allows them to stand on their own. I think the city
\nadministration must issue a regulation requiring companies to
\nemploy disabled people.<\/p>\n
In developed countries like Japan, nearly all buildings are
\nprovided with facilities for disabled people. But, in Jakarta,
\nthere are still many buildings that cannot be accessed by
\ndisabled persons.<\/p>\n
I also see that there are many public facilities like public
\nbuses and trains that are not accessible for the disabled.<\/p>\n
Aditia, 39, is a resident of Kebon Jeruk subdistrict, West
\nJakarta. He works as a coordinator of security guards for a
\nprivate company on Jl. Kwitang Raya, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Talking about accessibility, it is not only the disabled who
\ndo not have adequate facilities.<\/p>\n
As you know there are still many roads that do not have
\nsidewalks for pedestrians. This forces pedestrians to walk on the
\nside of the road, which is dangerous. It means that such
\nfacilities are not available to anyone.<\/p>\n
So we must not only urge the government to develop facilities
\nfor the disabled, but we must also call for the development of
\nmore urban facilities as a whole.<\/p>\n
Don't get me wrong. I agree that we must develop facilities
\nfor the disabled and we already have a regulation that requires
\nthe development of such facilities.<\/p>\n
