Firms gain customs clearance privilege<\/p>\n

The Directorate General of Customs and Excise has provided a
\nfacility for 10 well-reputed automotive and electronics companies
\nto clear their imported goods faster and cheaper through customs
\nat Tanjung Priok seaport.<\/p>\n
The customs office said on Tuesday in a statement that the 10
\ncompanies were allowed access to a \"priority lane\" at the port
\nthrough which they could clear their goods without undergoing
\ndocument examination and physical checks by customs officials.<\/p>\n
Customs officials will still carry out audits and spot checks
\non goods but the process will not hamper the flow of goods out of
\nthe port, the statement said, although it did not specify on the
\nchecks.<\/p>\n
The 10 companies are PT Toyota Astra Motor, PT Astra Daihatsu
\nMotor, PT General Motor Indonesia, PT Indomobil Suzuki
\nInternasional, PT Astra Nissan Diesel Indonesia, PT Denso
\nIndonesian Corporation, PT National Gobel, PT Sanyo Industries
\nIndonesia, PT Sharp Yasonta Indonesia and PT LG Electronics
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
It remains unclear why other major electronics firms,
\nincluding Samsung Electronics Indonesia, were not given a similar
\nfacility.<\/p>\n
Analysts say the customs office, which is considered to be the
\nnation's most corrupt institution, is notorious for its cruel and
\nvengeful treatment of companies that often criticize them in the
\nmedia.<\/p>\n
The priority lane scheme started on Tuesday as a trial basis
\nand will gradually be applied at other ports in the country, the
\ncustoms office said.<\/p>\n
The priority lane is one of the programs recently announced by
\nthe customs office in response to calls from the public and the
\nInternational Monetary Fund (IMF) for the agency to improve its
\nservice.<\/p>\n
However, experts and businessmen coldly greeted the programs,
\nsaying that no matter how good the program was, the country's
\ncustoms service would not improve until its officials changed
\ntheir corrupt mentality.<\/p>",
