Firm seeks Darwin-Kupang ferry route<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Timor Sea Transport, an Australian shipping
\ncompany based in Darwin, Australia is seeking to operate a round
\ntrip ferry service to link Darwin and Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara,
\nAntara reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the communications forum of East Nusa Tenggara,
\nEast Timor, and Australia's Northern Territory businesses, Ferdi
\nTanoni, said the Australian company wanted to open the route to
\nbenefit from an increase in the number of Australian tourists
\ngoing to eastern Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Ferdi, who is also the Australian company's liaison with
\nIndonesian companies said that tourists from Australia usually
\ntook flights via Denpasar in visiting other parts of eastern
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
\"If the ferry becomes operational, the trip from Darwin to
\neastern Indonesia via Kupang will be much cheaper,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He added that the ferry would take less than 24 hours to cover
\nthe 300 miles between Darwin and Kupang, with a load capacity of
\n200-250 passengers.<\/p>\n
Ferdi said that three companies in Kupang were also assessing
\nthe possibility to cooperate with the Australian company in
\noperating the ferry.<\/p>\n
He said the three companies suggested establishing a
\nconsortium comprised of Indonesia and Australia companies in
\noperating the ferry.<\/p>\n
\"We are still negotiating with some Indonesia companies and we
\nare trying to realize the operation of the ferry soon,\" Ferdi
\nsaid adding that he had already discussed the plan with the
