Firefighters lack equipment in RP<\/p>\n
PUERTO PRINCESA, Philippines (Reuters): The Philippines
\nbattled yesterday to control forest fires with machetes and
\nshovels, and officials said they expected more outbreaks with the
\nonset of summer.<\/p>\n
The Department of Foreign Affairs has appealed to the United
\nStates and Canada for fire-fighting equipment, including aircraft
\ncapable of dousing flames from the air, and Filipino diplomats
\nsaid they expected to hear from the nations soon.<\/p>\n
Two children have died and about 20,000 hectares of
\nagricultural and forestry land have been scorched since the fires
\nbroke out on Palawan island in the southwest of the country two
\nweeks ago, Governor Salvador Socrates said.<\/p>\n
Officials said hundreds of army reservists and tribesmen in
\nhalf a dozen affected mountain towns were fighting to control the
\nfires but were having difficulty containing the blaze because
\nthey had only primitive tools.<\/p>",
