Fired workers want more severance pay<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): At least 120 dismissed workers of PT Taat Subur
\nFortuna in Citeureup, Bogor, demanded on Thursday the company
\nincrease their severance pay according to existing manpower
\nregulations.<\/p>\n
Fourteen representatives of the workers visited the Jakarta
\nLegal Aid Institute on Thursday to seek legal advice.<\/p>\n
I. Wibowo, the workers' spokesman, said the company offered
\nthe dismissed workers severance pay amounting to 70 percent of
\ntheir monthly salaries after the factory closed down in August
\nlast year due to the prolonged economic crisis..<\/p>\n
\"We urged the company to raise the severance pay to at least
\ndouble the workers' monthly salaries as stated by manpower
\nregulations.\"<\/p>\n
He said the workers, who had worked at the company for at
\nleast eight years, earned between Rp 200,000 (US$22.20) and Rp
\n300,000 a month.<\/p>\n
He said the Ministry of Manpower's Labor Dispute Arbitration
\nBoard, which handled the dispute between the workers and the
\ncompany, decided in November last year to approve the dismissals,
\nbut ordered the firm to pay each worker severance pay equal to
\ntwo month's salary.<\/p>\n
The workers have frequently met with company executives to
\npress their demand for more severance pay, but to date they have
\nnot received satisfaction from the company, he added.<\/p>\n
Christina Rini, a lawyer at the legal aid institute, said on
\nbehalf of the workers she would invite company executives to the
\ninstitute to discuss the problem.<\/p>\n
\"If the firm refuses to give the proper amount of severance
\npay, we will ask the Cibinong District Court to seize the firm's
\nassets,\" Rini said.<\/p>\n
Wibowo said management locked the factory's gates in January
\nto prevent workers from entering the grounds.<\/p>\n
Because workers cannot enter the factory, they just sit in
\nfront of the gates every day, he said.<\/p>\n
\"The workers have threatened not to leave the site until their
