Fired workers demand pay<\/p>\n
BANDUNG: Hundreds of former PT Dirgantara Indonesia workers
\ndemonstrated on Tuesday to demand the government give them
\nseverance pay following their dismissal by the company.<\/p>\n
According to protest coordinator M. Sidharta, the workers had
\nthe law on their side after the Bandung District Court ruled in
\nfavor of the workers and ordered the company to give them their
\nseverance pay.<\/p>\n
\"With the fuel price increases, living costs are also rising.
\nPlease help to end our suffering. Give us our severance pay, as
\nagreed,\" Sidharta said in a speech.<\/p>\n
The Central Committee for the Settlement of Labor Disputes
\nearlier ruled that Dirgantara Indonesia could fire its
\napproximately 2,000 workers, but required the company to pay them
\nmore than double the amount of severance pay regulated by the
\nmanpower ministry.<\/p>\n
However, the company said it was financially unable to afford
\nthe Rp 160 billion in severance pay, which prompted the workers
\nto take the company to court.<\/p>\n
\"We will never stop demanding what is ours until the officials
\nrealize that it is a sin to abandon us,\" Sidharta said. -- JP<\/p>",
