Firecrackers no-no at Ramadhan<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Jakarta administration has prohibited the sale and use
\nof fireworks and firecrackers, especially during the Muslim
\nfasting month of Ramadhan and the Idul Fitri holiday, arguing
\nthat use of the explosives endangers bystanders.<\/p>\n
Head of the City Public Order Agency Soebagio said his office
\nwould crack down on trading centers for fireworks and
\nfirecrackers, which include Blok M market, South Jakarta; Tanah
\nAbang market, Central Jakarta and Jatinegara, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"Public order officers will start to search for the prohibited
\nitems a week before the fasting month begins. The main targets of
\nthe raids are traders and suppliers,\" he said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Last year, the police, for the first time, strictly enforced a
\nban on the sale and use of fireworks and firecrackers, which are
\ncategorized as explosive material.<\/p>\n
The strict enforcement reduced the number of victims who
\nsuffered injury from misuse of fireworks or firecrackers. Data at
\nCipto Mangunkusumo public hospital said only 24 people were
\ntreated for such injuries compared with the previous year's 60.
