Firecracker problem<\/p>\n

Playing with firecrackers in the street has been customary in
\nJakarta and certain other cities and towns particularly during
\nthe Ramadhan fasting month ending with the annual celebration of
\nIdul Fitri throughout the Islamic world.<\/p>\n
In Indonesia, newspapers have repeatedly reported the dangers
\nof playing with firecrackers in particular in the streets.
\nInjuries and fatalities from exploding fireworks involve not only
\nroad users but also pedestrians including women and children
\namong the victims.<\/p>\n
The government and the police along with NGOs have made
\nefforts to stop the prohibited dangerous firecracker "games"
\nincluding confiscating stocks of firecrackers and those sold in
\nthe streets, however, they do not seem to have been successful.<\/p>\n
I am of the opinion that there should be close cooperation
\nbetween the parties concerned like private manufacturers of
\nfirecrackers, law enforcement officials, and the Ministry of
\nCulture and Tourism to overcome the problem. Perhaps the
\nfollowing is what they should do:<\/p>\n
The ministry should be proactive in organizing various big
\nevents which include an aerial fireworks display for amusement
\npurposes. This way, I think, people will be happy and
\nmanufacturers will not have to close because if they are closed,
\ncertain people will be jobless and others will suffer losses. In
\nthe meantime, local authorities should supervise the events and
\nanticipate any problems. This way the law continues to be
\nenforced without causing loss to the people and people --
\nespecially pedestrians and other road users -- are protected.<\/p>\n
