Terrorists' actions and death threats against a number of
\npolitical figures (particularly the members of the House of
\nRepresentatives) are becoming increasingly horrifying and
\nsadistic. The killing of legislator (an Acehnese) Tengku
\nNasyiruddin Daud and the attempt to murder deputy speaker of the
\nPeople's Consultative Assembly Matori Abdul Djalil clearly
\nindicates that these actions are serious undertakings, leading
\nlegislators to feel that their lives are now in danger. Hence the
\nlegislators, in addition to asking for special protection from
\nthe Police, also suggest that they be allowed to keep firearms
\nfor self defense.<\/p>\n
However, House Speaker Akbar Tanjung says that there is no
\nneed for the legislators to arm themselves with firearms, because
\nthat will give an impression that people have no confidence in
\nthe security apparatuses. Besides, a certain skill is required to
\nuse firearms.<\/p>\n
I quite agree with the view that special protection is needed
\nfor the legislators. But I disagree with the idea to arm them
\nwith firearms because firearms alone cannot guarantee their
\nsafety. There are several alternative ways to protect oneself,
\nfor example, by practicing martial arts or getting physical
\nimmunity whereby one becomes invulnerable to weapons and the
\nlike. For me, keeping firearms is not the right solution to the
\nproblem and doing so could create new problems.<\/p>\n
