Fire razes nine houses in Kramat Jati<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Fire razed nine stores in Kramat Jati district,
\nEast Jakarta, at midday on Friday, a firefighter said.<\/p>\n
Tukiman said the fire broke out at about 1:30 p.m. and razed
\nthe stores, which had been converted from homes.<\/p>\n
An electronic store, a privately owned telecommunications
\nbooth and a retail store on Jl. Raya Bogor were among the
\ndestroyed property.<\/p>\n
Thousands of local residents gathered at the scene, creating
\ntraffic congestion along the street while they watched the
\nfirefighters extinguish the fire.<\/p>\n
As the firefighters finished, some of the crowd went into the
\nburned stores to view the damage and took goods which were
\nsalvageable.<\/p>\n
Some, however, began looting biscuits, dried noodles and
\ncigarettes. They threw them to the crowd from a gutted store in
\nthe back part of the area which was burned.<\/p>\n
The residents' action frightened other shop owners whose
\nstores were not affected by the fire. The owners immediately
\nclosed their shops, fearing the crowd would also loot their
\nbelongings.<\/p>\n
\"I understand if the store owners were afraid of the crowds,\"
\nAnis, a street vendor, said.<\/p>\n
Anis said he saw the fire start from the electric wiring at a
\nretail store.<\/p>\n
\"I'm sure the fire started from that store,\" he told
\nreporters.<\/p>\n
The fire, the first to happen in this month, was the fourth
\nincident over the past two months.<\/p>\n
\"We sent 13 fire engines to the area and managed to put it out
\nan hour later.<\/p>\n
\"We found no difficulty in getting water as there was a river
\njust behind the burning stores,\" firefighter Tukiman said. (06)<\/p>",
