Fire-prone buildings checked<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city's fire department has established a
\nspecial team to identify buildings which are prone to fire, an
\nofficial said Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The department's head, Suharso, said the team, which consists
\nof senior firefighters and private consultants, would be assigned
\nto examine the fire safety system and equipment of high-rise
\nbuildings here.<\/p>\n
\"The team is to check on whether developers have fulfilled
\ntheir obligation to equip buildings with adequate safety
\nequipment and whether they maintain it.\"<\/p>\n
Citing city regulation No. 3\/1992, Suharso said that
\ndevelopers should install safety devices such as hydrants,
\nsprinklers, emergency stairwells, emergency lighting and a fire
\nalarm which alerts the fire department's headquarters.<\/p>\n
He said that the team would start the year-long task this
\nweek.<\/p>\n
Suharso disclosed that the total number of skyscrapers here
\nhad climbed to 789 buildings, compared to 650 last year.<\/p>\n
Suharso said all high-rise developers should obtain a
\ncertificate of approval from the fire department before a
\nbuilding can be occupied.<\/p>\n
So far, only a few developers have met the necessary
\nrequirements for fire safety certification, he said.<\/p>\n
\"There is a tendency here to occupy buildings even though the
