Fire guts garment warehouse<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Fire destroyed a North Jakarta garment warehouse when
\nflames raced through the structure early Thursday morning,
\ndespite the efforts of more than 80 firefighters.<\/p>\n
In all, 12 fire engines with 84 firefighters descended on the
\nbuilding, located at Jl. Pademangan II, Gunung Sahari, North
\nJakarta, just across the Academy of the Maritime compound.<\/p>\n
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.<\/p>\n
The Pademangan Police deployed dozens of officers there to
\nprevent any looting, according to Antara.<\/p>\n
In a separate incident, the news agency reported on a house
\nfire that was caused by a candle which fell on a mattress, and
\nspread to two other rooms.<\/p>\n
That incident took place late at night in a densely-populated
\narea on Jl. Mangga Besar IV, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Twelve fire engines rushed to the scene and, within an hour,
\nfirefighters extinguished the flames.<\/p>\n
Hendra, the house owner, said the material losses were more
\nthan Rp 65 million.<\/p>\n
Even in a metropolitan city like Jakarta, not everybody has
\naccess to electricity.<\/p>\n
Many people must instead rely on kerosene lamps or candles --
\nwhich are often the cause of fires, especially in the slums. --JP<\/p>",
