Fire exhibition closes, safety message delivered<\/p>\n

With exhibiting companies acknowledging that both business
\nentities and government offices were interested in installing in
\ntheir buildings the fire protection systems on offer, the first
\nexhibition in the country to be staged by the fire protection
\nindustry was officially closed on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Officials from exhibiting companies said that they had won the
\ninterest of a considerable number of prospective buyers during
\nthe three-day exhibition.<\/p>\n
Bambang E. Santoso, chairman of PT New Sentosa, a local fire
\ntruck manufacturer, told The Jakarta Post that fire departments
\nfrom almost all regencies in the country was present and
\ninterested in buying the company's products.<\/p>\n
"Also, a number of companies wanted to augment their fire
\nsecurity systems with products manufactured by us," he said.<\/p>\n
He added that most of the prospective buyers were interested
\nbecause his company offered fire protection equipment at prices
\nlower than that manufactured abroad.<\/p>\n
Engineer from a manufacturer of state-of-the-art fire
\nprotection equipment Roy Valentino echoed the statement made by
\nBambang that through the exhibition, his company had been able to
\nintroduce the latest developments in fire protection system
\ntechnology.<\/p>\n
"Although there were no transactions made during the three-day
\nexhibition, a number of officials from fire departments and
\nbusiness entities showed great interest in our products," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Indonesian coordinator of U.S.-based National Fire Protection
\nAssociation (NFPA) Placidus S. Petrus said that
\nthanks to the exhibition, the utmost importance of fire
\nprotection systems had now gained a wider acceptance.<\/p>\n
"People from a wide range of backgrounds, such as
\nfirefighters, industrialists, building consultants, even
\nparamedics, came to this exhibition and learned a lot about the
\napplication of fire protection systems," he said.<\/p>\n
Visitors also benefited from the exhibition.<\/p>\n
A safety officer from PT Semen Cibinong, Sunarya, was seen
\nconversing with an engineer about the prospect of using an
\nenvironmentally friendly substance for fire extinguishers in his
\ncompany.<\/p>\n
"Fire extinguishers in my company still use halon, which is
\nnow prohibited by the government; is the substance produced by
\nyour company not harmful to the environment?" he asked an
\nengineer from an exhibiting company that produced an
\nenvironmentally-friendly fire extinguishing gas.<\/p>\n
Halon is a substance akin to chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) that
\nhas long been regarded as making a great contribution to the
\ndepletion of the ozone layer.<\/p>\n
Another visitor, who wished to remain anonymous, was also
\nspotted discussing with a vendor the possibility of replacing the
\nsoftware for fire protection systems in his company with the
\nlatest version.<\/p>\n
Given the success of the exhibition, organizer's
\nrepresentative Yessi Oktavia told the Post that the exhibition
\nwould be held on a regular basis.<\/p>\n
