Fire and rescue (Damkar) personnel and vehicles have been deployed to\nclean volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau that has settled on a number\nof facilities and public spaces. The move is intended to reduce ash\ndeposits that could disrupt community activities and endanger residents\u2019\nhealth. Safrizal Zakaria Ali, Director-General of Regional\nAdministration at the Ministry of Home Affairs, said fire brigades can\ncollaborate with the police in carrying out clean-up operations in\naffected areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cDamkar can collaborate with the National Police, who have\nwater-spraying vehicles, to clean up volcanic ash that is dangerous to\nresidents\u2019 health,\u201d Safrizal said in a statement in Jakarta on\nMonday.<\/p>\n
Spraying is being carried out to remove ash that has settled on\nvarious surfaces. Ash on the roads can also become airborne again when\nblown by the wind or disturbed by passing vehicles. For this reason, a\nnumber of affected locations have been targeted for clean-up so that\ncommunity activities are not further disrupted.<\/p>\n
Safrizal said spraying using Damkar vehicles is being carried out at\nvarious public facilities, from roads to hospitals. According to him,\nthe fire brigade\u2019s involvement in cleaning volcanic ash is part of its\nservice to the community, particularly in disaster situations.<\/p>\n

He considered the presence of fire brigade personnel in various\naffected areas, including in Lampung, as proof of the state\u2019s rapid\nresponse in dealing with disaster situations.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy thanks go to Damkar personnel for their active participation.\nDamkar is not only present at fire extinguishing operations, but also in\nnatural disaster management,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Safrizal explained that Damkar falls under the guidance of the\nDirectorate-General of Regional Administration at the Ministry of Home\nAffairs. To date, the role of Damkar best known to the public is fire\nprevention and suppression. Prevention efforts are carried out through\noutreach, education, and various measures to minimise fire risks in\ncommunity environments. However, Damkar\u2019s duties are not limited to\nputting out fires.<\/p>\n
\u201cDamkar\u2019s other core duties are rescuing victims, protecting lives\nand property, and carrying out evacuations during fire incidents and\nother emergencies, including natural disasters, accidents, and the\nrescue of animals and valuables,\u201d Safrizal said.<\/p>\n
