The Surabaya City Fire and Rescue Department (DPKP) identified the\norigin of the fire at the Integrated Heart Center (PPJT) building of\nSoetomo Hospital, Surabaya, East Java, on Friday (May 15) morning.<\/p>\n
The Head of the DPKP Surabaya Firefighting Division, M Rokhim, stated\nthat the fire originated in the pharmacy on the fifth floor of the PPJT\nbuilding.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fire was found on the fifth floor, in the pharmacy,\u201d said M\nRokhim in a statement.<\/p>\n
Rokhim said that the area affected by the fire was 4 x 3 meters. The\nsuspected cause is a short circuit or electrical malfunction in the\nrefrigerator cable in the pharmacy.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe area affected is approximately 4 m x 3 m on the fifth floor. The\ncause is suspected to be an electrical short circuit in the pharmacy\nrefrigerator cable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Although the fire originated in the pharmacy, the smoke spread\nthroughout the entire floor and rooms in the PPJT building, where\npatients were being treated.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe DPKP evacuated patients\/ICU patients on the sixth floor.\nOfficers broke several windows and also used blowers to remove the\nsmoke,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Rokhim said that at least 18 fire trucks were deployed to the\nlocation. Including a Bronto Skylift unit to reach the height of the\nfloor.<\/p>\n
\u201c13 firefighting units + 5 rescue units. The Bronto ladder unit was\nalso used to reach the sixth floor, handling from the outside,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
In the incident, a total of 37 patients had to be evacuated from the\nPPJT building to the resuscitation room. However, one patient on the\nsixth floor was declared dead, even though he had been successfully\nevacuated.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne patient from the sixth floor was declared dead by the Emergency\nMedical Team of Soetomo Hospital, named Sutaji (46), from Kapuan\nVillage, Cepu District, Blora, Central Java,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The Head of the PPJT Installation at Soetomo Hospital, Dr.\u00a0Rerdin\nJulario, confirmed this. He said that the fire originated in the\npharmacy on the fifth floor.<\/p>\n
Shortly before the fire grew and the smoke spread, patients with\nheart problems who were being treated in a room near the pharmacy had\nbeen successfully evacuated.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fire on the fifth floor was in the pharmacy. At that time, in\nthe room near the pharmacy, there had been an emergency procedure, the\nevacuation of one patient who was fitted with a heart pacemaker,\u201d said\nRerdin.<\/p>\n
However, the Director of Soetomo Hospital, Prof.\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Cita Rosita\nSigit Prakoeswa, chose to wait for further investigation and did not\nwant to speculate about the cause of the fire.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are not yet willing to speculate. It may not be [the pharmacy],\nit is possible that the location is there because the smoke was first\ndetected there,\u201d said Cita.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Cita also emphasized that the patient\u2019s death in the\nincident was purely due to the disease he suffered, not due to the\nimpact of the fire or smoke exposure.<\/p>\n
Cita said that the patient was in critical condition before the fire\noccurred. During the incident, the patient was receiving assistance\nthrough medical equipment because he was experiencing failure of several\nmajor organs.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe died of illness. Because, as our colleagues explained, his\ncondition was already being supported by three organs, namely the lungs,\nheart, and kidneys.
