Fire destroyed parts of the Padangpanjang mayor's office on Jl.
\nSutan Sjahrir in Padangpanjang, West Sumatra, early Friday
\nmorning, paralyzing the office's activities for the whole day, a
\nreport said.<\/p>\n
The fire, which gutted a number of rooms, excluding those of
\nthe mayor's and the city secretary's, and destroyed office
\nequipment and incinerated all documents inside, occurred at 3
\na.m.<\/p>\n
Witnesses said the incident was first spotted by a motorist
\npassing in front of the office. He then blew his horn to wake up
\nthe office's guards.<\/p>\n
Five fire engines, which were sent to the site from
\nPadangpanjang and neighboring Bukittinggi municipality and Tanah
\nDatar regency, had difficulty putting out the blaze. The distance
\nfrom the fire department's offices to the mayor's office and
\nstrong winds contributed to the firefighters' difficulty in
\nextinguishing the fire.<\/p>\n
Padangpanjang Mayor Johannes Tamin told reporters later in the
\nday that the fire destroyed the rooms of the office's legal
\naffairs department, administrative affairs department, social
\naffairs department, general affairs department, economic affairs
\ndepartment and treasury department, while dozens of computers
\nwere destroyed.<\/p>\n
\"There was nothing we could remove from the burning rooms ...
\nThe fire happened so suddenly,\" Tamin said, adding that his
\noffice had yet to calculate the losses, including the petty cash
\nkept in the safe.<\/p>\n
There is no information available on when the office's
\nemployees will resume work, pending the mayor's decision on an
\nalternative building to be temporarily used to provide services
\nto the public.<\/p>\n
\"The only available and usable space is the office's meeting
\nhall,\" the mayor said.<\/p>\n
Chief of the East Padangpanjang Police substation First Insp.
\nRustam Bima said the police had not yet determined the cause of
\nthe fire.<\/p>\n
\"We're still questioning the two security guards on duty last
\nnight -- Hasan Basri and Epi,\" Bima said on Friday.<\/p>",
