JAKARTA \u2014 It is only three in the morning, but Sulasmi is already\nbusy handling containers of cakes. At her modest stall in Slipi, West\nJakarta, the woman, who was born in 1974, begins arranging lemper,\nrisoles and doughnuts before the city wakes up.<\/p>\n
As dawn approaches, customers usually start arriving. They are\nworkers and students looking for a bite to eat before setting off for\nwork and school. By around 8am, Sulasmi\u2019s stock has usually sold out.\nOnce her morning\u2019s trading is over, she can go home and rest.<\/p>\n
Sulasmi sets aside some of the proceeds from her pre-dawn cake sales\nas savings. She had long wanted to open an account at an Islamic bank,\nboth to put away her hard-earned money and to have it managed in\naccordance with Islamic principles, without riba (interest). But her\nplans often fell through because she was exhausted after work.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter selling until eight or nine, my body is completely worn out; I\nfeel very weak,\u201d Sulasmi told Republika some time ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo have a shower, get dressed, then go to a bank branch and queue \u2014\noh, I just couldn\u2019t manage it,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
Her daughter, 23-year-old Kurniawati, eventually helped make it\npossible. Kurniawati had first heard about the BSya app through\nadvertisements she often saw while using public transport to get to\nuniversity. She told her mother, who had wanted an Islamic bank account\nfor some time, that BCA Syariah customers could now open an account\nwithout visiting a branch.<\/p>\n
Sulasmi was initially hesitant because she felt unfamiliar with\ntechnology. With Kurniawati\u2019s guidance, however, the process proved\nsimple: she only had to photograph her identity card, enter a few\npersonal details and follow the on-screen verification instructions.<\/p>\n
After finishing her sales, while resting beside the now-empty cake\ncontainers, Sulasmi\u2019s BCA Syariah account was successfully activated.\n\u201cIt\u2019s a huge help for small traders like me. I can do it from home\nwithout spending money on transport. A few taps on my phone after\nselling, and it\u2019s done,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Seeing how easily her mother could transact, Kurniawati, who had\ninitially helped her, also became interested in opening a BCA Syariah\naccount. As a student in Depok, she has different banking needs from her\nmother.<\/p>\n
Kurniawati relies on public transport for her daily commute to\ncampus. Through the BSya app, she can easily top up her Flazz card to\nsupport her everyday journeys.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe interface feels very youthful, and I access it on my phone. The\nvideo-call verification was not difficult either; everything is easy,\u201d\nKurniawati said.<\/p>\n
