Find the masterminds<\/p>\n
Following the upheavals in Situbondo and Tasikmalaya -- two
\nNahdatul Ulama (NU) strongholds -- NU chairman Abdurrahman Wahid
\naccused the instigators of the riots of acting to intentionally
\ndiscredit the organization.<\/p>\n
Information received by the NU chairman apparently indicated
\nthat a movement calling itself the Naga Hijau (Green Dragon) was
\nbehind the two incidents.<\/p>\n
In the present heated political situation pending the general
\nelections, an escalation of issues and accusations is to be
\nexpected. Nevertheless, allegations or assumptions that have no
\nclear basis are like dangerous poison if they are allowed to
\ncontinue.<\/p>\n
The assurance given by the Armed Forces (ABRI) Chief of Staff
\nfor Social and Political Affairs Lt. Gen. Syarwan Hamid that ABRI
\nwas not "playing with fire" and had no part in the recent riots
\nis a relief.<\/p>\n
A more detailed and open explanation would probably help even
\nmore to alleviate the confusion that now exists in our society
\nregarding the situation. It would be even more effective if ABRI
\ncould bring to court the intellectual masterminds behind the
\nrecent riots.<\/p>\n
People would feel more reassured if the masterminds are
\nidentified and punished. People naturally also hope that legal
\naction will be taken openly and without discrimination.<\/p>\n
