Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has issued a strong warning to\ntax officials who are manipulating the management of refunds. He\nemphasised that he is prepared to remove or deactivate officials from\nthe Directorate General of Taxes (DJP) who are proven to be colluding\nwith taxpayers.<\/p>\n
This firm action comes amid scrutiny over the potential for\nsignificant leakages in the refunding of excess tax payments\n(restitusi), valued at Rp361 trillion in 2025.<\/p>\n
The government is currently drafting new regulations through the\nDraft Ministerial Regulation on Finance (RPMK) to tighten the\naccelerated refund mechanism.<\/p>\n
Purbaya revealed indications of practices that harm the state,\nparticularly in the natural resource export sector such as coal.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor example, if the coal industry pays VAT and gets refunded, it\nshouldn\u2019t be that what they pay back is higher than what they receive.\nThat would be a loss. There are even cases where the exports haven\u2019t\nleft yet, but the refund has already been issued. It\u2019s like I\u2019m being\nrobbed. That\u2019s what I want to control,\u201d he explained in Jakarta, quoted\non Saturday, 25 April 2026.<\/p>\n
According to him, the lax refund system could be exploited by certain\nparties, both taxpayers and internal tax authorities. Therefore,\ncomprehensive oversight will be tightened to ensure the principle of\nfairness is maintained.<\/p>\n
Not only targeting taxpayers, Purbaya also assured that internal\ncleansing will be carried out without compromise. He emphasised that he\nwill act immediately against tax service offices suspected of processing\nunreasonable refund amounts.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo if there\u2019s a place where tax refunds are too tight and we\ninvestigate, and problems are found, I\u2019ll automatically move the head. I\ncan\u2019t fire them, though,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
However, the options for enforcement are now broader. With support\nfrom new policies, problematic officials can even be deactivated from\ntheir positions.<\/p>\n
This statement was reinforced by the Secretary General of the\nMinistry of Finance, Robert Leonard Marbun, who stated that the non-job\nmechanism is now possible. Purbaya also assured that he will utilise\nthat authority to minimise state losses.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut the new Secretary General says we can non-job them. The\nPresident\u2019s order is the same. If necessary, if this is the case, then\nnon-job them. Give them their salary, tell them to stay at home. The\nloss is smaller for us. Now I can do that, and I will do it,\u201d he\nconcluded.<\/p>\n
