Final results on June 21: KPU<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Representative of parties contesting Monday's
\npoll urged the General Elections Commission (KPU) to improve its
\nperformance and keep to the original schedule in announcing its
\nvote count.<\/p>\n
Amid continuing reports of glitches at the local level of vote
\ncounting, leaders of the political parties, including Akbar
\nTandjung of Golkar and Yusril Ihza Mahendra of the Crescent Star
\nParty (PBB), met with commission (KPU) chairman Rudini.<\/p>\n
The politicians, who also included Nurdin Purnomo of the
\nIndonesian Unity in Diversity Party (PBI) and Clara Sitompoel of
\nthe Indonesian Christian Nationalists Party (Krisna), also called
\nfor a daily updated display of the results.<\/p>\n
In response, Rudini told a media briefing at the Joint
\nOperations Media Center (JOMC) at the Aryaduta Hotel that the
\nfinal announcement of vote counting results would be made on June
\n21. According to the schedule, results of vote counting at the
\ndistrict level are due to be announced on June 10, for the
\nregency level on June 14, and for the provincial level on June
\n17.<\/p>\n
Poll observers earlier voiced concerns that behind the scenes
\nmaneuvering might be behind the slow vote tally. A party
\nexecutive requesting anonymity also hinted he was suspicious of
\nthe process.<\/p>\n
JOMC operational director Ross Mackay denied vote counting was
\nunpunctual, saying the JOMC had been on schedule in terms of
\nproviding \"early and indicative\" results of the June 7 poll.<\/p>\n
\"The General Elections Commission here gave us till June 10 to
\nprovide early indicative results... (Now) one can clearly see
\nwhich parties are leading in the provisional tally,\" he said on
\nThursday. As of 12:14 p.m. on Thursday, at least 11 percent of
\nvotes cast by approximately 112 million people had been tallied.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan)
\nand the ruling Golkar party were then leading with 4.1 million
\nvotes and 2.56 million votes respectively.<\/p>\n
\"We are doing our jobs ... no technical problems here,\" Mackay
\ntold The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Yusril refused to speculate that rigging was behind the slow
\nrelease of results. \"I do not want to accuse anyone or any
\nparties of manipulating the poll results without sufficient and
\naccurate evidence,\" he said.<\/p>\n
However he agreed that independent organizations and poll
\nmonitoring institutions could continue issuing their daily
\nupdated poll results, but should change the format from a
\nnational accumulative report to a provincial accumulative report.<\/p>\n
\"A party's election victory does not rest on the number of
\nvotes it can get, but obviously on the amount of seats for the
\nHouse of Representatives (DPR) it can secure in every province.<\/p>\n
\"The number of seats it secures will be determined by the
\nnumber of votes a party gets in a province divided by the divisor
\nin each province,\" he said, adding that the divisor differs from
\none province to another.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Rudini asked the JOMC not to use the KPU logo for
\nits vote tallies to avoid confusing the public.<\/p>\n
Preliminary voting results announced since Monday included an
\nofficial tally by the KPU and an unofficial count by JOMC. The
\nfigures differed.<\/p>\n
\"The official vote count is that of the KPU. Since JOMC's data
\nis different from that of the KPU I implore the center not to use
\nthe commission's seal,\" Rudini said.<\/p>\n
Parallel vote counting has been initiated by several other
\ninstitutions, including Antara news agency, the Independent
\nElection Monitoring Committee (KIPP), the University Network for
\nFree and Fair Elections (UNFREL) and the Rectors Forum.<\/p>\n
KIPP announced Wednesday that PDI Perjuangan had gained 8.5
\nmillion votes based on information from some 22.9 million out of
\nthe approximately 112 million voters nationwide.<\/p>\n
The JOMC is operated by the International Foundation for
\nElection System, a foreign agency financed by the United Nations
\nDevelopment Program (UNDP). Its vote count can be accessed at
\nhttp:\/\/www.kpu.go.id. The KPU vote count can be accessed at
\nhttp:\/\/hasilpemilu99.kpu.go.id.<\/p>\n
The JOMC earlier promised it would deliver provisional results
\nmore quickly than the KPU because it would tap subdistrict
\nelection committees as its sources, while the KPU would obtain
\nits data from district election committees.<\/p>\n
The meeting between Rudini and leading party officials was
\nheld just three hours before the media conference, which was held
\nat 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Earlier in the day, deputy chairman of the General Elections
\nCommittee (PPI) Djuhad Mahja said all institutions were free to
\nconduct their own tabulation of the vote count, but that the
\nofficial report would be issued by the KPU only.<\/p>\n
\"Reports outside of the one issued by the KPU, including the
\nones displayed on the television screens, are not official,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Election observer and political scientist Miriam Budiardjo
\nsuggested the public not only focus on the official data, but
\nalso refer to unofficial results posted by other organizations.<\/p>\n
\"Remember that for so many years, the ruling Golkar party has
\nbeen the country's winning party,\" Miriam said.<\/p>\n
She said this \"victory\" was not only enjoyed by Golkar, but
\nalso by the Indonesian people.<\/p>\n
\"Most Indonesians have lived by this victory and have
\nprospered with it for 32 years. So what makes anybody think that
