Fighting escalates in Bougainville<\/p>\n
PORT MORESBY (Reuter): Fighting on Papua New Guinea's
\nBougainville island has intensified with one soldier and two
\nseparatist rebels killed this week, a government spokeswoman said
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
Renewed violence on Bougainville, wracked by a seven-year
\nsecessionist war, has dashed hopes of a cease-fire proposed at
\npeace talks between Bougainville politicians and the rebels'
\nBougainville Revolutionary Army (BRA) in Australia last month.<\/p>\n
Eleven soldiers and rebels have died in fighting on the island
\nsince July despite attempts by a transitional government to
\nrestore normalcy and services to the island.<\/p>\n
Fighting on the island, 800 kilometers northeast of the Papua
\nNew Guinea mainland, flared up last weekend when government
\ntroops shot dead two BRA members and wounded rebel commander Paul
\nBobby.<\/p>\n
Bobby and the two rebels were attempting to ambush a truckload
\nof soldiers en route to Buin in the island's south.<\/p>",
