Fighting among political elite<\/p>\n

On Jan. 22, a number of political figures including Eros Jarot
\n(Bung Karno Nationalist Party), Sri-Bintang Pamungkas (Indonesian
\nDemocratic Union Party) and labor activist Dita Indah Sari
\n(National Front for Indonesian Workers Struggle\/Democratic
\nPeople's Party) got together to set up a loose coalition called
\nthe National Coalition, and then declared the need to set up a
\nnew democratic government.<\/p>\n
Ordinary people, including me, may wonder whether or not
\n(President) Megawati (Soekarnoputri)'s administration is a
\ndemocratic one. Will the National Coalition guarantee that the
\nnew government it has proposed will be more democratic than the
\npresent one? If the government under Megawati and (Vice
\nPresident) Hamzah Haz is not democratic, those voting for them in
\nthe People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) must also not be
\ndemocratic. So, the MPR must also be replaced by a new one
\nbecause the present one elected a president and a vice president
\nwho are not democratic.<\/p>\n
Again, laymen are fed up with the bickering and fighting of
\nthe political elite, who always purport to represent the people.
\nEventually, they are the ones who have brought misery to the
\npeople they claim to help.<\/p>\n
It is the hope of all ordinary Indonesians that the political
\nelite will be ready to sit at a negotiating table to find the
\nbest solutions for the problems of this country. They must stop
\nmaking statements that only confuse the people and lead to the
\nfighting among themselves. They must try to respect one another
\nand remember that they serve as role models for the people. They
\nmust stop prioritizing their personal and group ambitions at the
\nexpense of the entire nation.<\/p>\n
