Fighters call for Great Timor State<\/p>\n
KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: The Indonesian Military (TNI) on
\nThursday threatened harsh action against any group or individual
\nwho attempts to declare East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) an independent
\nstate.<\/p>\n
\"It would be treason and they will be crushed,\" warned Udayana
\nMilitary Commander Maj. Gen. William T. da Costa who oversees
\nsecurity in NTT, West Nusa Tenggara and Bali.<\/p>\n
He said separatist campaigners have no place in the province.<\/p>\n
Da Costa was responding to reports that some activists have
\nbeen building support for an independent Great Timor state, which
\nwould unite East Timor (already independent) with their cousins
\nin the western half of the island which falls in NTT.<\/p>\n
The idea has been brewing for centuries but came to a head in
\na meeting last year between Liurai or local Timorese kings, and
\nincluded informal leaders of East Timorese descent.<\/p>\n
William confirmed NTT's Wirasakti Military Chief Colonel
\nMoeswarno Moesanip's statement that politicians and non-
\ngovernmental organization activists from NTT and East Timor have
\nbeen advocating an independent Great Timor state.<\/p>\n
He said the military had the identities of some of the
\nindependence campaigners, adding that some of them are indigenous
\nfigures (non-Javanese). He declined to name them,
