Fewer foreign artists perform here<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The number of foreign performing artists in the
\ncity has decreased due to current political tension, Aminullah,
\nan executive of the City Political and Social Affairs office
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
"Probably the foreign artists are afraid that the current
\npolitical tension would result in riots," Aminullah told
\nreporters at City Hall.<\/p>\n
But he said there were fewer foreign artists here because
\nlocal companies could not afford them due to the high dollar rate
\nagainst the rupiah.<\/p>\n
He said there were 100 foreign artists who conducted live
\nperformances in the city in May, while in June, the number
\ndecreased to 67.<\/p>\n
"We have no complete data for this month, but we believe there
\nwould be fewer artists here due to the upcoming special session
\nof the People's Consultative Assembly," Aminullah said.<\/p>\n
He said 18 local companies were registered with his office
\nthat brought in the artists, mostly from China.<\/p>\n
Sixty artists who came here last month were from China, while
\nthe remaining seven artists came from the Philippines, Taiwan,
\nSingapore, Hong Kong and United States, he said.<\/p>\n
Aminullah said the number of local artists who were sent
\nabroad, especially to Japan, increased from 113 people in May to
\n147 people in June. They were sent by 22 companies.<\/p>\n
A source said the so-called artists, mostly women, worked at
\nJapanese bars and karaoke singing halls. (jun)<\/p>",
