Unlike in the past years, no sound of sirens across the
\ncountry remarking minutes of silence to pay tribute to the fallen
\nforefathers of independence.<\/p>\n
Only a handful of people attended the Heroes Day ceremony at
\nthe Kalibata heroes cemetery.<\/p>\n
Among top military brass, only Jakarta Garrison chief Brig.
\nGen. Harry Pisand Pinem and Jakarta Military commander Maj. Gen.
\nBibit Waluyo attended the 15-minute ceremony at Kalibata,
\npresided over by Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Jusuf
\nKalla.<\/p>\n
The country's leaders, including the President, Vice President
\nand legislative speakers, were not seen commemorating the heroes'
\nday.<\/p>\n
In the heroes' city of Surabaya, where the heroes' day came
\nfrom, the commemoration was marked by a social drive led East
\nJava governor to clean the city from garbage.<\/p>\n
\"The city has long facing problem with garbage. In line with
\nthe commemoration of the National Heroes' Day, I urge people here
\nto clean up the city,\" governor Imam Utomo said.<\/p>\n
Another meaningful celebration was a strewing flower ceremony
\nconducted at KRI Teluk Ende war ship, led by
\nCoordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Susilo
\nBambang Yudhoyono.<\/p>\n
Also attended at the ceremony was the Navy Chief of Staff Adm.
\nIndroko Sastrowiryono.<\/p>\n
Despite less fanfares, Navy spokesman Commodore Franky Kayhatu
\nsaid the national heroes' day was still meaningful for the
\nIndonesian Military (TNI).<\/p>\n
He said each military units held their own ceremonies, led by
\ntheir own leaders.<\/p>",
