Few corruption cases reach court<\/p>\n
BANDUNG: The number of corruption cases investigated and tried
\nin court was not as high as people presumed, Chief Justice Bagir
\nManan said on Monday.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Supreme Court's
\nnational working meeting in Bandung, West Java, Bagir said most
\ncorruption cases never reached court.<\/p>\n
Bagir said his office had examined 149 corruption cases in the
\npast year, mostly from outside Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"Of all the cases that reach the appeal examination, 18 cases
\naffirmed the verdicts of the lower courts, 11 cases did not meet
\nformal requirements, and the remainder are still being heard,\"
\nBagir said.<\/p>\n
Indonesia has been named as one of the most corrupt countries
\nin the world. The courts are also held in low regard.<\/p>\n
Bagir said 10 judges and a number of prosecutors were
\ncurrently undergoing special training to handle corruption cases.<\/p>\n
He said the Supreme Court expected to train 300 judges to

JAKARTA: The House of Representatives is again unlikely to
\nmeet its legislation target, having finished only one bill -- on
\nmoney laundering -- since the current session opened on Aug. 15.<\/p>\n
The House had aimed to complete deliberating 31 bills between
\nAug. 15 and Sept. 26.<\/p>\n
Two committees in charge of deliberating bills on industrial
\ndispute resolution and the establishment of 22 new regencies had
\nfailed to finish their work on time.<\/p>\n
The House Steering Committee (Bamus) had set Sept. 16 as the
\nendorsement day for bills on money laundering, industrial dispute
\nresolution, and the establishment of 22 regencies but only one
\nwas finished.<\/p>\n
A staff member at the House Secretariat said they had been
\ntold by the committees that they could not finish their tasks.<\/p>\n
The House also set Sept. 23 for the endorsement of bills on
\nBank Indonesia, the mechanism of law drafting, and geothermal.
\nWith only two weeks to go, it is impossible for the House to

\nIslamic boarding schools (pesantren) left for the United Kingdom
\nover the weekend to attend a five-week training course.<\/p>\n
NU, the country's biggest Muslim organization, claims to have
\n40 million members across the country.<\/p>\n
During their stay in the United Kingdom, they would study
\neducational curriculum development, teach religious studies, and
\nencourage inter-faith dialogue and tolerance.<\/p>\n
The British Embassy in Jakarta is supporting the training at

JAKARTA: President Megawati Soekarnoputri expressed concern
\nMonday over the disappearance of thousands of important state
\ndocuments, including the Surat Perintah 11 Maret (The March 11
\nInstruction Letter), popularly known as Supersemar.<\/p>\n
Speaking during the opening ceremony of an international
\nseminar on archives here on Monday, the President said the
\ndisappearance of important state documents demonstrated the
\nstate's poor appreciation of many important papers.<\/p>\n
\"How can such an important document, and thousands of other
\nimportant papers, disappear? It reflects the level of
\nappreciation of our own history,\" the President said.<\/p>\n
Supersemar, issued by former president Sukarno, served as a
\nlegal basis for former dictator Soeharto to assume leadership of
\nthe nation in 1967.<\/p>\n
Only former Military Commander Gen. Daud Joesoef is believed
\nto have any knowledge about Supersemar, but so far he has refused
\nto talk about the document.<\/p>\n
Even after she became President, Megawati, Sukarno's daughter,
\nstill could not find the truth or the whereabouts of the

The seven candidates were Akbar Tandjung, Gen. (ret) Wiranto,

During the event, Wiranto said Golkar should not be satisfied

JAKARTA: Some 1,238 people have registered at the General
\nElections Commission (KPU) to contest 128 seats on the Regional
\nRepresentatives Council (DPD) in the 2004 election, the KPU said

KPU chairman Ramlan Surbakti said Jakarta had the highest
\nnumber of regional representative registrants with 96 people,
\nwhile Papua had the lowest registrants with only 14.<\/p>\n
A number of public figures such as former Minister for the
\nEnvironment Sarwono Kusumaatmadja, businesswoman Mooryati
\nSudibyo, and politician Bambang Warih Kusuma have reportedly
\nregistered to contest DPD seats.<\/p>\n
Ramlan said the KPU at provincial and regental levels would
\nstart verifying all information supplied by the prospective
