'Fences still needed'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Additional security measures would have to be
\nconsidered if fences and walls between buildings were removed, a
\ncouncilor said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Bandjar Marpaung who heads Commission D for development
\naffairs, said people here still had a distressing tendency to
\ndamage other people's property if given the opportunity.<\/p>\n
He was commenting on the city's proposed pilot project to
\nremove borders between buildings on Jl. Jend. Sudirman and Jl.
\nM.H. Thamrin.<\/p>\n
\"The policy could be accepted in the new superblocks where
\nsecurity is coordinated,\" Bandjar said.<\/p>\n
In other areas managements would need police services, and
\npolice were already understaffed, he added.<\/p>\n
The policy is one of the efforts to make the city more
\nfriendly-looking, the head of the city's architecture team, M.
\nDanisworo, said earlier.<\/p>\n
Building owners were given until the end of this month to tear
\ndown fences or walls, but representatives of building managements
\nsaid they had not heard about the policy.<\/p>\n
Bandjar said the policy could not be implemented if managers
\nsaid they did not know of it.<\/p>\n
Achmad, General Affairs Manager of PT Danareksa Jakarta which
\nruns the Bursa Efek Jakarta building on Jl. Jend. Sudirman, said
\nlocal authorities had involved managements in other matters, like
\nmaintaining cleanliness, but had not informed them of the no-wall
\npolicy.<\/p>\n
A secretary, Evilina, of the PT Gunung Sewu property
\nmanagement firm, which manages the Bapindo building on Jl. Jend.
\nSudirman, also said the management did not know of the policy.<\/p>\n
She said security guards would have to be added if walls were
