        "content": "<p>Fences around MPR\/DPR improper<\/p>\n<p>From Kompas<\/p>\n<p>The construction of fences four-meters high around the<br>\nPeople's Consultative Assembly (MPR)\/House of Representatives<br>\n(DPR) building as reported in Kompas (October 25) is in my view<br>\nquestionable.<\/p>\n<p>First, to my knowledge, the Jakarta provincial government bans<br>\nthe erection of fences more than three meters high. If the<br>\nconstruction continues, the MPR\/DPR violates the provincial<br>\nregulation and Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso should take action.<\/p>\n<p>Second, the presence of such fences is improper because there<br>\nshould be no barriers between representatives and the people they<br>\nrepresent. The roadblocks indicate the MPR\/DPR's reluctance to<br>\ncommunicate with the public, while their activities are financed<br>\nby taxes.<\/p>\n<p>Third, the MPR\/DPR budget should not be spent on projects that<br>\nare not beneficial to society. The country has only limited<br>\nfunds, which should be utilized only for priority projects. The<br>\npopulation is facing hard times as a consequence of fuel price<br>\nhikes.<\/p>\n<p>J.
