Female workers want more pay<\/p>\n
SEMARANG: Around 1,000 workers of a garment factory, all
\nwomen, thronged in front of the Central Java provincial
\nlegislative council here to demand better salary and treatment.<\/p>\n
The workers of PT Surya Indah Garmindo, asked the legislators
\nto pay serious attention to the fate of women workers.<\/p>\n
Among the demands were better pay, meal and transportation
\nallowance, and hygienic water. The workers also urged the
\nmanagement to pay social security insurance (Jamsostek) for them
\nand allow them to join any labor union.<\/p>\n
\"We want freedom to affiliate with any trade union. There are
\nnow many labor unions, not only the SPSI,\" spokesperson for the
\ndemonstrators, Aspiah said, referring to the All-Indonesia Labor
\nUnion Federation.<\/p>\n
Aspiah told the legislators the local office of the Ministry
\nof Manpower had failed to help the workers.<\/p>\n
Abdul Kadir Karding, who represented the legislators, said he
\nwould mediate the dispute. \"We will meet the management and
\ndiscuss the demands, as long as they are lawful and reasonable,\"
