`FeMale' turns office into art gallery<\/p>\n

At first, the private-run radio station FeMale just wanted to
\nhave an office decorated with paintings or other art displays
\nthat can be changed anytime to maintain fresh look on the
\noffice's interior.<\/p>\n
Its turned out the radio crew came up with the idea of making
\ntheir office into an art gallery where their listeners and
\nvisitors can view art exhibitions also. The office interiors are
\nalways fresh with interesting art displays.<\/p>\n
\"When someone walks into an office, they normally will find
\npaintings that have not been changed for years ... they are stuck
\non the wall, permanently. It's pretty boring, isn't it?,\" Nuky
\nSurachmad, general manager of FeMale, chuckled.<\/p>\n
\"On the other hand, if there is an art gallery in the office,
\nthe ambiance is continually changing,\" she added.<\/p>\n
The idea to merge their office with an art gallery came when
\nthe radio station moved to their new offices at Ratu Plaza on Jl.
\nSudirman from Bintaro area last year.<\/p>\n
In a bid to get closer with their listeners, FeMale re-
\ndesigned their offices by opening the whole area.<\/p>\n
\"Many offices, especially media companies, tend to be
\nsecretive and close themselves off from visitors and clients. But
\nwe want the radio station to be open and accessible for public,
\nour business partners as well as the listeners,\" Nuky explained.<\/p>\n
Conceived as a radio station targeting urban women, FeMale now
\ndraws some 125,000 listeners between the ages of 25 to 39 in
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
When visitors step into the office, they are immediately
\nexposed to a unique and open office space. There are no cubicles.<\/p>\n
The studio utilizes a glass wall so that visitors can see
\nthe radio broadcasters in action.<\/p>\n
The walls are left empty and broad to give maximum display to
\nthe artwork.<\/p>\n
It was not until Nuky met with young architect Yori Antar that
\nthe idea was put into action.<\/p>\n
\"Yori asked if we interested in having an exhibition of his
\narchitecture photography in the office. We thought it was a
\nbrilliant idea,\" Nuky recalled.<\/p>\n
After Yori's exhibition in August last year, FeMale radio
\nbegan to hold art exhibitions regularly featuring different
\nartists and art works ranging from paintings to photography to
\nfashion.<\/p>\n
So far, the radio has held four art exhibitions and the latest
\nexhibition is tie-dye artwork by young fashion designer Oscar
\nLawalata. The exhibition, which was recently launched runs until
\nMarch.<\/p>\n
The responses from the public and artists have been
\nencouraging.<\/p>\n
\"We have listeners who come here with their families. Many
\nartists have asked if they can have their artwork on display
\nhere,\" Nuky said.<\/p>\n
Ricky Anton Worotikan, interior designer who designed the
\noffice said that any company can have their own art gallery in
\ntheir offices.<\/p>\n
To keep office activities undisturbed by the public who want
\nto see the exhibition, the radio opens its door for exhibition
\nvisitors twice a day during lunch hours, from 12 a.m to 2 p.m,
\nand in the evening from 5 p.m to 7 p.m.<\/p>\n
Nuky added that the art gallery is not only an idealistic
\nmission to educate its listeners on artwork but also a powerful
\ntool in promoting the radio station itself.<\/p>",
