Indonesian poultry farmers, particularly those raising laying hens, are facing severe financial strain due to surging feed costs amid a sharp decline in egg and live chicken prices below government reference levels. While the government's Reference Purchase Price for eggs stands at Rp26,500 per kilogram, farmers are receiving only around Rp22,000, with production costs hovering similarly, eroding profit margins. This crisis is exacerbated by an oversupply of eggs in the market, highlighting vulnerabilities in the agricultural supply chain and the need for policy interventions to support the sector.

Poultry farmers raising laying hens are gathering eggs at the Karya
Mandiri Village-Owned Enterprise Farm in Kalisuren, Bogor Regency, West
Java, on Monday (11/5/2026). Business operators in the poultry sector
are now facing dual pressures due to the surge in feed prices amidst the
plummeting selling prices of eggs and live chickens at the farmer level.
The increase in production costs is seen as increasingly burdensome for
farmers following the continuous rise in chicken feed prices over the
past few weeks. Meanwhile, chicken egg prices have experienced a
significant decline, eroding the profit margins of farmers. The price of
live birds or live chickens at the farmer level is currently still
moving below the government’s Reference Purchase Price (HAP). Based on
government regulations, the HAP for live chickens is at the level of
Rp25,000 per kilogram. However, field prices are still ranging from
Rp16,000 to Rp18,000 per kilogram. For laying hen eggs, the HAP is set
at Rp26,500 per kilogram. However, the current selling price at the
farmer level is only around Rp22,000 per kilogram. On the other hand,
the production cost of chicken eggs has reached around Rp21,000-Rp22,000
per kilogram depending on the scale of the farmer’s business. Irham, one
of the chicken coop staff, said that business pressures have started to
be felt in the last two weeks along with the rise in chicken feed
prices. “The price of chicken feed that keeps rising is around Rp6,800
to Rp7,000 per kilo. Now it has risen to Rp7,300 to Rp7,500 per kilo,”
said Irham to CNBC Indonesia. He also revealed that egg prices at the
farmer level have also experienced a sharp decline. “The egg price from
our farmer level was sold for around Rp23,000-Rp25,000, now it has
dropped to Rp22,000 following the production cost,” he added. The plunge
in egg prices is occurring amid conditions of abundant egg supply in the
market. The high availability of stock is putting increasing pressure on
selling prices at the producer level, while upstream sector cost burdens
continue to rise.
",
