French President Emmanuel Macron has emphasised that the European Union's efforts to bolster its defence capabilities are not intended to replace NATO but rather to respond to US calls for greater European autonomy in security matters. Speaking after meeting Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Macron stressed the need to strengthen the European pillar within NATO, while Mitsotakis welcomed the initiative as a reasonable step towards regional stability amid tensions with Turkey. The leaders renewed a 2021 defence cooperation agreement, including mutual military aid clauses and a €3 billion arms procurement package, underscoring deepening Franco-Greek military ties.

French President Emmanuel Macron has asserted that the European
Union’s efforts to strengthen its defence capabilities are not meant to
replace NATO. He stated that this move is actually a response to the
United States’ urging for Europe to become more independent in
maintaining its security.

Macron conveyed this after meeting Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos
Mitsotakis on Saturday. He emphasised that Europe must strengthen the
defence pillar within the NATO framework, not weaken it.

“The lesson we must take is that we can no longer depend on others.
We must strengthen the European pillar within NATO and build a European
defence, not against anyone and not as an alternative,” Macron said.

According to him, over the past decade, Washington has repeatedly
asked European countries to increase their security responsibilities.
This request, Macron said, was made “sometimes subtly, sometimes
not.”

Mitsotakis welcomed the statement. He assessed that the United States
should support Europe’s steps, which are now seriously building defence
independence.

He even described the US demand for Europe to increase defence
spending as “reasonable.” According to him, this step is important for
strengthening regional stability.

During his visit to Athens, Macron also renewed the defence
cooperation agreement between France and Greece that was signed in 2021.
The agreement includes a clause for mutual military assistance if one of
the countries is attacked.

“This commitment is non-negotiable and cannot be undermined,” Macron
said. He emphasised that this message must be clear to any party that
could potentially become a threat.

The cooperation also includes a €3 billion military procurement
package. Greece is purchasing 24 Rafale fighter jets and four advanced
frigates from France.

Macron and Mitsotakis even inspected one of those frigates, the
Kimon, directly. This step demonstrates the depth of military
cooperation between the two countries.

Greece itself has had tense relations with Turkey. This situation has
prompted Athens to continue strengthening its military capabilities.
",
