FBI not part of probe team: Minister<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Coordinating Minister for Political and Security
\nAffairs Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said on Monday that the visit of
\nU.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigators to Papua
\nshould not be seen as intervention into the investigative process
\nregarding the Freeport shooting.<\/p>\n
The investigation of the case had to be conducted under the
\nIndonesian legal system while the presence of the FBI "is just to
\nassist the Indonesian joint investigating team", Susilo said.<\/p>\n
"Due to the incident, two American citizen were killed. Thus,
\nthe U.S. government needs a thorough investigation report as it's
\naccountable to the Senate and Congress there. So, we are pleased
\nto allow them (FBI agents) to come to Papua.<\/p>\n
"Otherwise, I'd only get tired of being accused (by the
\npublic) of not seriously investigating the incident," Susilo told
\nreporters here on Monday.<\/p>\n
The government formed a joint investigating team comprising
\nmilitary and police personnel in December, 2002, after the
\nfindings made by the two institutions failed to concur.<\/p>\n
The investigation by the police concluded that military
\npersonnel were involved in the shooting, while a probe by the
\nmilitary said that the Free Papua Movement (OPM) was behind the
\nbloodshed at the PT Freeport copper and gold mine in Timika,
\nPapua.<\/p>\n
U.S. President George W. Bush has called for a Bali-style
\njoint investigating team involving FBI agents. The FBI men are
\nexpected to arrive here on Tuesday. --JP<\/p>",
