FBI agents to return to probe Papua killing<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents will
\nreturn to Indonesia's Papua province within weeks, as part of an
\ninvestigation into the murder of two Americans there, a senior
\nmilitary officer said Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The agents will compare the results of their questioning of
\ncivilians and military officers last month with the investigation
\ncarried out by the Indonesian military, said regional military
\npolice chief Colonel Sutarna.<\/p>\n
\"They will bring the results of their analysis,\" Sutarna said,
\nadding the agents were due at the end of this month or in early
\nApril.<\/p>\n
The FBI last month questioned 30 soldiers about the August 31
\nambush by an armed gang near the US-owned Freeport gold and
\ncopper mine, which killed two US teachers and an Indonesian
\ncolleague.<\/p>\n
Twelve others, most of them Americans, were wounded when the
\ngunmen fired more than 100 rounds at a convoy carrying Freeport
\nemployees.<\/p>\n
Sutarna said the military investigation team had yet to find
\nany suspect in the ambush.<\/p>\n
Papua's deputy police chief, Brigadier General Raziman
\nTarigan, last November quoted a witness as saying that Kopassus
\nspecial forces soldiers were suspected in the attack. He was
\nlater transferred to Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Reports of military involvement could seriously undermine US
\nefforts to resume full military ties with Indonesia, which have
\nbeen restricted since 1999 because of the military-backed
\nviolence in East Timor.<\/p>\n
Kopassus has denied any role in the murders. Some army
\nofficials have previously blamed the ambush on a poorly-armed
\ngroup of separatist rebels. -- AFP<\/p>",
