Faxes, daily instructions among evidence against GAM<\/p>\n

Government representatives are leaving for Sweden this weekend
\nwith proof they believe shows Aceh Free Movement (GAM) leaders
\nliving in Sweden are involved in rebellion and terror attacks in
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
This mission will be the fourth in three years attempting to
\nconvince Sweden to take action against the GAM leaders.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters after meeting President Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri on Friday, government representative Brig. Gen.
\nHaryanto Sutadi said the evidence should be enough to initiate
\nlegal proceeding against GAM leaders.<\/p>\n
\"There are faxes, daily instructions, declarations and a
\nnumber of documents that should comply with Swedish standards of
\nlegal evidence,\" said Haryanto, the criminal director at National
\nPolice Headquarters.<\/p>\n
He said the documents showed there was a clear line of command
\nfrom the GAM leaders in Sweden to GAM field commanders in Aceh.<\/p>\n
Several GAM leaders, namely Hasan Tiro, Zaini Abdullah and
\nMalik Mahmood, have been living in exile in Stockholm for years.
\nSome have become Swedish nationals.<\/p>\n
\"We are not asking for their extradition. We are only trying
\nto convince Stockholm that GAM is a rebel group and has conducted
\na series of terror activities here. We will ask them to do
\nsomething according to their domestic law,\" Haryanto said.<\/p>\n
In line with the imposition of martial law in the province,
\nJakarta has increased pressure on Stockholm to take legal action
\nagainst the GAM leaders.<\/p>\n
Stockholm has said they can not take action against citizens
\nwho have not committed crimes.<\/p>\n
Another team member, international law expert Hikmahanto
\nJuwana, said the team would only be asking that Sweden restrict
\nthe activities of the GAM leaders in issuing instructions to
\nleaders in Aceh.<\/p>\n
Other members of the team, led by former foreign minister Ali
\nAlatas, include Foreign Affairs director general for America and
\nEurope Arizal Effendi, ministry director for America, Europe
\ncooperation Retno Lestari, ministry director for Human Rights and
\nSocial Affairs I Gusti Agung Wasekapujo and State Intelligence
\nAgency (BIN) representative B.E.J. Sofyan.<\/p>\n
The team is scheduled to meet Swedish officials, including
\nPrime Minister Goran Persson and return to Jakarta on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Ali Alatas said the team was not aiming to create friction,
\nbut would merely ask for help.<\/p>\n
\"We are not trying to create a dispute with Sweden, we just
\nhope that they can cooperate with us.\"<\/p>",
