Favorite horses enter top race<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The second series of the 28th Soeharto Cup will
\nsee top favorite racing horses from Jakarta, North Sulawesi, West
\nJava and Central Java in a fierce battle to help decide the
\nwinner of the trophy.<\/p>\n
Thunderbird and Krisna from West Java, Jakarta's Robinhood
\nchampion of this year's Indonesian derby and Benfica from North
\nSulawesi, have been tipped favorites for the 2,000 meter race,
\none of eight races scheduled for Sunday at the Pulo Mas track,
\nEast Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Jakarta took the commanding lead by racking up 27 points after
\nthe first series held on July 24, followed by West Java with
\n18pts for second place. Third was North Sulawesi with 16 points.<\/p>\n
Sunday's races offer 138 points up for grabs split into eight
\nraces. The Jakarta team has won the annual race for the last two

Romario back in Barcelona<\/p>\n
BARCELONA (AFP): Brazilian World Cup striker Romario arrived
\nhere Tuesday asking Barcelona supporters to forgive him for
\nfailing to report for training three-weeks ago.<\/p>\n
Romario ignored the deadline in order to extend his holiday
\nafter helping Brazil to victory in the USA World Cup in July.<\/p>\n
He flew out Monday from Rio de Janeiro saying \"What I really
\nwant is to come back to Brazil, to Rio, as quickly as possible.\"
\nBut on arrival he asked fans to \"forgive\" him and said he would
\nmeet coach Johan Cruyff to discuss the problem today.<\/p>\n
Voeller signs for Bayer Leverkusen<\/p>\n
BONN (AFP): Veteran German international Rudi Voeller is to
\nsign a two-year contract with Bayer Leverkusen.<\/p>\n
Voeller, 34, is quitting troubled French club Olympic
\nMarseille in a US$323,000 transfer deal.<\/p>\n
Voeller, with 90 caps, asked for a move when the French club
\nwas relegated following a match-fixing scandal last season.<\/p>\n
Rio intends to bid for 2004 games<\/p>\n
RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuter): Rio de Janeiro intends to bid to
\nhost the 2004 Olympics and could build an Olympic enclave, cut
\noff from the rest of the city, to avoid exposing competitiors and
\nvisitors to the city's notorious crime-rate, mayor Cesar Maia
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Rio's proposed bid won the backing of the Brazilian Olympic
\nCommittee (COB) at a meeting on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The COB had been due to choose between Rio and Brasilia for a
\nbid to present to the International Olympic Committee, but
\nBrasilia withdrew without a vote.<\/p>\n
Lebow enters Hall of Fame<\/p>\n
NEW YORK (Reuter): Running guru Fred Lebow, who has been
\nbattling brain cancer for the past four years, on Tuesday was
\ninducted into the U.S. National Track and Field Hall of Fame
\nahead of schedule.<\/p>\n
U.S. athletics officials decided to forgo the usual procedure
\nand induct Lebow immediately, rather that wait for the September
\n12 balloting and formal induction ceremony in December in St
\nLouis.<\/p>\n
\"We thought the timing was good in light of Fred's health and
\nwe thought it was in his best interest to have it at this time,\"
\nLarry Ellis, president of USA Track and Field, said at the
\nceremony honouring for the 62-year-old New York City Marathon
\ndirector.<\/p>\n
Almsick ready for Rome<\/p>\n
BERLIN (Reuter): Franziska van Almsick, Germany's six-time
\nEuropean swimming gold medallist, said on Tuesday she is ready
\nfor next month's world championships in Rome but would not
\npredict any world records for herself.<\/p>\n
The 16-year-old van Almsick told the Berlin Foreign
\nJournalists Club the competition has increased considerably since
\nshe won two silver medals and two bronze medals at the 1992
\nOlympics in Barcelona.<\/p>\n
\"I had a very successful training camp in Mexico and the
\ntraining continues to progress very well,\" she said of her recent
\n80-km (50-mile) per week training regimen.<\/p>",
