Favor-seeking entrepreneurs<\/p>\n
As President Abdurrahman Wahid has told us, many
\nbusinesspeople come to him asking for favors, i.e. government
\nprojects. Those people lack the creativity and the capacity to
\nstart their own undertakings.<\/p>\n
But why come to the President? Perhaps it is because they
\nregard Abdurrahman's government as identical to the New Order
\nregime, under which many government projects were given to
\ncronies of Soeharto through corruption, collusion and nepotism.
\nGovernment projects have always appealed to businesspeople
\nbecause they provide secure captive markets. That is to say, hard
\nwork is not needed and there is no fear of competition.<\/p>\n
Obviously, this is cause for concern. While the government is
\ntrying to transform our economic institutions and implant in
\nthem a new vision, a corrupt mentality is still present in some
\nof our businesspeople who are unprepared to live in the new
\nmillennium.<\/p>\n
In this era of reform, with its emphasis on the eradication of
\ncorruption, collusion and nepotism in all areas of life, our
\nbusinesspeople are expected to be able to become the driving
\nforce of development. Building a nation alludes not only to the
\ndevelopment of its identity by molding norms, it also means
\nboosting the nation's creativity and education as an investment
\nin proper human resources development.<\/p>\n
