Fashion school's students show creative force<\/p>\n

Oriental themes, young, playful attire and a striking '60s
\ncomeback were the flavors of the night when ESMOD Jakarta
\npresented its 8th annual Fashion Festival last week.<\/p>\n
This year's show -- taking When Invisible Gets Visible as its
\ntheme and held in the classy ballroom of The Regent hotel in
\nSouth Jakarta -- presented the work of students graduating from
\nits one year certificate program and three-year international
\ndiploma program.<\/p>\n
The graduates of the French franchised international fashion
\nschool, set up in 1996 under the patronage of the Indonesian
\nDesign Development Foundation to provide professional education
\nin fashion design, broke new ground this year by introducing
\nmenswear, children's wear and lingerie collections.<\/p>\n
First to strut their stuff on the catwalk were models decked
\nout in the creations of ESMOD Jakarta's graduates from the one-
\nyear program. With themes like Oriental Grunge by Christine F.
\nTambunan, Japanese Simplicity by Linda Nadia P. Salam and Geisha
\nReconstruction by Roy Mulyanto, the oriental trend was obviously
\ntop of mind for the students.<\/p>\n
Among the 19 collections, the theme emerged in the form of a
\nblue kimono, Kabuki style make-up, Shanghai collars and the ever-
\nprominent oriental flower.<\/p>\n
Another prominent feature was the distinctly youthful style.
\nRiyam Putri Dayani with her Street Turns Sport design seemed
\ninspired by the streets of New York, with playful creations
\nfeaturing rolled up shorts and the trucker baseball hat -- a
\nprominent fad among today's youngsters.<\/p>\n
An undying fashion mainstay that found it way to the catwalk
\nwere jeans -- embroidered, fringed and cut asymmetrically.<\/p>\n
Also interesting was the predomination of female students in
\nthe night's shows, with only two men represented. An emerging
\ncrop of young, talented female designers may change the gender
\ngap in Indonesian fashion, traditionally dominated by men.<\/p>\n
The night's winners among the certificate students were Rika
\nRiskawati, who won the special jury award with her Art of Beatles
\ndesigns -- a winning combination of a black and white checkered
\nsuit with puffy sleeves, dark jeans, metallic belt and pink
\ncorsage pinned on the suit.<\/p>\n
Tiara Surti won the best pattern maker award with her The Face
\nof Spain designs. The best fashion design prize went to Irawati
\nwith her The Austerity World, bearing a slightly futuristic theme
\nwith the use of shimmer fabric with matching silver metallic
\nheadband.<\/p>\n
In between the fashion shows of the one and third year
\nstudents, clowns on stilts and juggling jesters appeared on
\nstage, wearing what seemed to be reconstructed plastic tops with
\na flower collar. The costumes were designed as part of a project
\nby the one year students in collaboration with Harris Hotel of
\nParis.<\/p>\n
Loud cheers marked the start of the shows by third year
\nstudents. Felia Kurniawidi Ningrum's Urban Breakthrough displayed
\na second line with a strong street flavor. Decking out her models
\nin jeans and Converse sneakers, she also had them modeling out
\nplaid patterns and a backless hooded jacket.<\/p>\n
Her first line displayed butterfly patches and asymmetrical
\ncuts, and she received the Golden Needle Award.<\/p>\n
Hip with Attitude by Sariparamita Kurniawati and Felicia
\nRegina took the Fashion Business Special Award. They introduced a
\nlingerie line that was true to its rebellious and sexy theme,
\nhighlighted by a bustier top and a see-through wrap skirt. Their
\nfirst line, a mixture of street smart and hip-hop glam, featured
\nribbons on neatly cut suits, pleated skirts and high-heeled
\nboots.<\/p>\n
Roida Erika S. Sihotang's She's A Lady showcased women's wear
\nas her first line design and children's wear as her second line,
\nwith clean cuts and classy designs that will appeal to both the
\nworking mom and her teddy bear-toting tot.<\/p>\n
Lynda Sutardja's work on two separate designs paid off, as she
\nwas awarded the best patternmaker accolade for her Kawaii theme.<\/p>\n
\"Kawaii means cute in Japanese and the designer, Alnia
\nSamantha, and myself as patternmaker, wanted to translate the
\nshow's theme of when invisible gets visible by mixing animation
\nand the girlish Japanese look through our clothes designs,\" said
\nLynda after the show.<\/p>\n
The Kawaii design transformed into a fun and playful look on
\nthe catwalk, featuring a crisp white jacket and sleek
\naccessories.<\/p>\n
Other winners included Monica Himawan, who went home with the
\nspecial jury award for her Future Past Tense work and Yenny
\nMellisa Triswanto's Mirror Image that was chosen for the best
\nfashion design accolade.<\/p>\n
Not on show were the creations of 52 second year students, who
\nworked together with Lee Cooper in designing costumes on the
\ntheme of Olympic Vintage Glam. The creations -- reconstructions
\nof the denim company's old designs into new modern and glamorous
\npieces by the students -- also came down to a contest, with first
\nprize going to Kiky Indah Lampah.<\/p>\n
The school's president, Mayadewi Hartarto, was pleased by the
\nshowings on the night.<\/p>\n
\"I am very proud of the results and success of the children.
\nEspecially for the third year program, this is the first time we
\nhave displayed menswear and children's wear.. so it's a
\ncombination of previous years' work.\"<\/p>\n
This year's show also signaled the expansion of ESMOD Jakarta
\ninto new territory by getting the designs out to the general
\npublic.<\/p>\n
Apart from collaborative works with companies like Lee Cooper
\nand projects with Harris Hotel, ESMOD Jakarta will soon produce
\nready-to-wear attire. Working together with Mal Kelapa Gading in
\nNorth Jakarta, ESMOD will open its ready to wear store this
\nAugust.<\/p>",
