Farming agency blasted for breaking its promise<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Central Jakarta Mayoralty expressed
\ndisappointment on Monday over the City Agriculture Agency's
\nfailure to keep its promise to provide trees for the
\nreforestation program in the area.<\/p>\n
The protest was aired by Central Jakarta Mayor Andi Subur
\nAbdullah in a statement, copies of which were made available to
\nthe press on Monday.<\/p>\n
\"In December of last year, head of the agency, Srikanti
\nWiwahari, promised to provide 100,000 trees for the city
\nreforestation program, some 10,000 of which were to be planted in
\nthe Central Jakarta area,\" Andi said.<\/p>\n
In a meeting at the Central Jakarta mayoralty office on
\nMonday, the agency's head for production division, Soma
\nHairuddin, disclosed that the agency would provide 150 trees to
\nthe program.<\/p>\n
Andi said he was still expecting the delivery of the trees as
\nSrikanti promised.<\/p>\n
He urged the agency early this March to provide the trees
\nbefore the program started -- it was slated to begin the second
\nweek of this month.<\/p>\n
\"The call was made because we want to take advantage of the
\nheavy rainfall during April and May, conditions which are
\nbelieved to be good for the growth of the newly planted trees,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Andi said that he and his staff mobilized residents to support
\nthe program by participating in the planting of the trees. The
\nresidents, he said, have already prepared themselves to take part
\nin the event.<\/p>\n
In Central Jakarta, there are at least 700 hectares of land --
\nwhich represents 15 percent of the total area -- that need to be
\nreforested.<\/p>\n
Andi said the trees would be distributed to all 44
\nsubdistricts in the area. Each will receive 227 trees.<\/p>\n
The program is part of the campaign Governor Sutiyoso
\ninitiated for a Green Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Andi said the Central Jakarta mayoralty had declared former
\nKemayoran Airport, the former Lapangan Banteng bus terminal, the
\nNational Monument (Monas) park and Senayan area, as green areas.<\/p>\n
Starfruit, guava and cashew trees will be planted in Tanah
\nAbang district and colorful flowers will be planted in all of the
\nmayoralty's eight districts.<\/p>\n
Separately, Srikanti told the Jakarta Post that the agency
\nwould be ready to provide the trees as promised, but the
\ndistribution of the trees would be the responsibility of the
\nCentral Jakarta Agriculture Agency.<\/p>\n
\"We'll send the trees upon request of the agency,\" Srikanti
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He urged the Central Jakarta mayoralty to take good care of
\nthe trees while they wait in limbo to be planted. (06)<\/p>",
