        "content": "<p>Farmers stage protest<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: About 200 farmers and activists demonstrated outside<br>\nthe People's Consultative Assembly on Wednesday, demanding a<br>\ndecree to defend the interests of peasants and customary<br>\ncommunities.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstrators came from various organizations, such as the<br>\nUnited Pasundan Farmers, the Alliance of Nusantara Customary<br>\nCommunities, the Alliance of Indonesian Farmers and the<br>\nFederation of Indonesian Farmers.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstrators said that farmers and customary communities<br>\nin Indonesia had been deprived of their rights over the past 30<br>\nyears and wanted them restored.<\/p>\n<p>The Assembly has completed its preliminary deliberation of the<br>\ndraft decree on Agrarian Reform and Natural Resource Management<br>\nthat will become the basis for reform of subordinate laws.<\/p>\n<p>Hendrik Saragih of the Federation of Indonesian Farmers, who<br>\nacted as the protesters' spokesman, said that the draft decree<br>\nhardly touched on the common people's interests. -- JP<\/p>",
