Farmers set up own organization<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: The Organization of Free Farmers was proclaimed on
\nFriday at the end of a three-day gathering of farmers from
\nYogyakarta and southern areas of Central Java.<\/p>\n
The congress, attended by about 100 farmers from 13 regencies,
\nissued a statement announcing the organization's demands and the
\nestablishment of the Free Farmers Union.<\/p>\n
The statement said farmers had not gained a strong bargaining
\nposition with the government, which they said had issued many
\npolicies that had been to their disadvantage. The congress was
\nfacilitated by the local branch of the Legal Aid Institute.<\/p>\n
They demanded that the government allow for the \"right of
\nlocal potential in farming technology to grow\", and that land
\ndisputes should be settled justly.<\/p>\n
Existing laws and rules, the farmers said, have not provided
\nprotection for farmers, and instead \"have been used to facilitate
\nthe interests of a few people and capital owners who draw profit
