Farmers protest imported sugar<\/p>\n
MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: Dozens of sugarcane farmers in South
\nSulawesi flocked to the provincial legislative council on Friday
\nto protest the influx of allegedly smuggled sugar into the
\nprovince.<\/p>\n
The protesters, from the People's Sugarcane Farmers
\nAssociation, said the circulation of the foreign product on the
\nmarket had caused the price of domestic sugar to fall during the
\nharvest season.<\/p>\n
They urged to the government and the council to ban or to
\nlimit the entry of foreign sugar into the province.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, police raided a warehouse in the South Sulawesi
\ncapital of Makassar and found 2,000 tons of sugar allegedly
\nsmuggled from Thailand.<\/p>\n
The sugar was shipped from Medan, North Sumatra, without the
\nnecessary documentation from the State Logistics Agency (Bulog)
\nand state-owned plantation company PT Perkebunan Nusantara.<\/p>\n

\nAssociation said foreign sugar was sold for less than Rp 3,600
\nper kilogram, while the retail price of domestic sugar stood at
